Si Scott

Si Scott’s beautiful, illustrative & typographic work has been circulating recently – is circulating, who am I to stop it. His portfolio is a little tricky to navigate so I’ve put some of my favorites inside this post.

Paul Laffoley

Laffoley’s paintings depict his vision of reality with geometric precision: theories of time, space, the universe, the soul, etc. Laffoley is partially autistic, living and working alone in his windowless studio. Seven of his roughly 800 paintings are currently on display at the Kent Gallery in NYC.

A roughly half-inch piece of metal was found in his occipital lobe near the pineal gland during a routine CAT scan in 1992 which he believes to be of extraterrestrial origin. His ideas about the future, global warming, terra-forming, architecture, planetary colonization, time travel and other far-reaching topics are, if not alien, at least unique.

Jonathan Coulton @ PopTech

Last week I left a note on Laura’s desk
It said I love you signed anonymous friend
Turns out she’s smarter than I thought she was
She knows I wrote it, now the whole class does too
And I’m all alone during couple skate
When she skates by with some guy on her arm
But I know that I’ll forget the look of pity in her face
When I’m living in my solar dome on a platform in space (…)

Jonathan Coulton has written a lot of songs, some nerdy some not. Most of them are available for listening in their entirety on his website, and for purchase, including this one.

Tim Fort’s Kinetic Art

Tim Fort’s work is a cross between domino wizardry and a Rube Goldberg machine, kind of like a living Domino Rally meets Honda Cog. The piece in the video above actually shifts gears near the end, sending canvassed rows of popsicle sticks flying in the air like some kind of kinetic pyrotechnics display. Kinetitechnics. Heh. Many more videos are available of other performances and the various techniques or “gadgets” he employs.
