Full Solar Spectrum

Above are the visible colors of the sun as mapped by the McMath-Pierce Observatory – in short, a representation of the complete palette of visible light we have available on Earth. The brightest region is yellow-green, and the dark patches are blocked by gas at or above the surface of the sun.

Reality Sandwich

I’m contributing to Reality Sandwich now, a new site that describes itself thusly:

Reality Sandwich is a web magazine for this time of intense transformation. Our subjects run the gamut from sustainability to shamanism, alternate realities to alternative energy, remixing media to re-imagining community, holistic healing techniques to the promise and perils of new technologies. We hope to spark debate and engagement by offering a forum for voices ranging from the ecologically pragmatic to the wildly visionary (which, to our delight, sometimes turn out to be the one and the same). Counteracting the doom-and-gloom of the daily news, Reality Sandwich is a platform for voices conveying a different vision of the transformations we face. Our goal is to inspire psychic evolution and a kind of earth alchemy.

Aw yeah my kind of humans. They’ve got a ton of really excellent contributers already on the roster, Paul D. Miller (a.k.a. DJ Spooky) and Daniel Pinchbeck just to name a couple that ring familiar. I’ll be posting occasional links and commentary in the link blog – check it out if you like reality. And sandwiches.

Peace Between the Sheets

According to Peace Between the Sheets author Marnia Robinson, most people are severely addicted to the dopamine release that follows an orgasm. The downside to a dopamine release (which feels great), is that it is followed by a release of Prolactin. Prolactin release typically follows dopamine and is associated with the withdrawl/hangover phases of using drugs like alcohol or cocaine. Prolactin release is thought to be associated with lower libido, weight gain, hostility, anxiety, prostrate trouble and a general decline in hormone production.

A scientist, Robinson presents research in her book that suggests that the reason people often feel very disconnected from each other after sexual climax is because of the frequency of orgasm in a relationship as well as the quality of sex leading to the orgasm (furious or uncontrolled sex being associated internally with a drive towards an unhealthy chemical crash). The result is that couples can feel as terrible as a hangover for a few days after every climax. And often enough the negative feelings can be projected onto a person’s partner, causing conflict in other areas of the relationship.

(…) If we, as a society, have religiously idolized sex while placing it on a restricted, Victorian pedestal, and if our backlash has been to make sex compulsive, wild and unrestrained, then the balance might be found in managing our big O’s and finally finding peace between our sheets.

Plasma/Flame Speakers

In much the same way that a conventional speaker uses a magnetic field to push a driver, plasma speakers (sometimes called flame speakers) use electricity to move the surrounding air, projecting sound directly from their discharge. In the videos above sound is being produced completely from tesla coils, there are no conventional speakers in use. Eastern Voltage Research appears to have instructions and tools for building something like this yourself.
