Spidernethewood

The structure is built in the middle of foliage. As plant growth continues, pressure on the netted walls increases and the structure remains intact – strengthened, in fact, at least visually. Tons of pictures at the following link:

Tomorrow night, Sunday, August 12, around 9:00 pm (in your local time zone), this year’s Perseid meteor shower will be starting to peak. These meteors are considered “earthgrazers”: they will appear on the horizon and skim long and colorful overhead. By 2 am Monday morning their rate might be up to dozens an hour, climaxing around dawn at more than one a minute.

Earth passes through the debris of comet Swift-Tuttle producing this meteor shower every August, but as luck would have it this Sunday will also bring a new moon, so the sky will be at its darkest.

Beowulf

This movie looks sick. Using motion capture the actors’ movements are recorded, including eye-lid flutters via electrooculography, enabling the entire movie to be live acted yet completely computer animated. It will be simultaneously released in traditional theaters and IMAX 3D.

IMAX lends itself to the incredible image detail in Beowulf and in 3D, it will transport the audience directly into the story.

Robert Zemeckis, director

Starring Angelina Jolie, Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, Crispin Glover and John Malkovich. Be sure to check out the HD trailer. Opens November 16.

Too Darn Hot

No, it’s not your imagination, or latent global warming anxiety/guilt. OK maybe a little of the latter, but it is damn hot outside – at least here in the Southeastern US. With heat indexes in excess of 110 degrees Fahrenheit it’s important to keep cool.

Saundra Young, CNN’s senior medical news producer, advises the following:

  • drink plenty of liquids
  • wear light-colored, light-weight, loose-fitting clothing
  • don’t consume too much alcohol or sugar (both dehydrate your body)
  • avoid very cold drinks (can cause stomach cramps)
  • limit outdoor activity to morning/evening hours and stay inside when possible

Related: researchers predict global warming will level off in the next couple years, then resume rising into the early 2010s producing record highs.
